Is your skin Changing After 40? You’ve taken care of your skin for decades. You’ve moisturized, worn SPF, and stayed consistent with your routine. But somewhere around your 40s, your skin started doing something completely unexpected — Your Skin Is Changing After 40 and nobody warned you about it.

Maybe it’s oilier than ever, but also somehow dry and flaky in patches. Maybe your pores look larger, your jaw line is breaking out like you’re a teenager again, and no matter what product you try, that radiant, healthy glow you once had seems just out of reach.

You’re not imagining it. Your skin is changing — and the reasons go much deeper than just “getting older.”

This blog is to  help women over 40 understand what’s really happening beneath the surface of their skin — and more importantly, what to do about it. This post breaks it all down: the science, the solutions, and the resources — including my growing Glow After 40 eBook series — that will help you finally take back your glow.

Why Your Skin Is Changing After 40

Skincare for Women Over 40 Is Completely Different. Here’s a truth that the beauty industry rarely talks about: the skincare rules change dramatically after 40. Products that worked beautifully in your 30s may suddenly feel wrong on your skin — because they are wrong for your skin now.

Starting in your late 30s and accelerating through your 40s and 50s, your body goes through a cascade of hormonal shifts collectively known as perimenopause. Estrogen and progesterone levels begin to fluctuate — and these two hormones have a profound effect on your skin.

Here’s what those shifts look like in practice:

  • Sebum production becomes erratic. Falling estrogen levels can cause your skin to swing between excessively oily and uncomfortably dry — sometimes on the same day.
  • Collagen production slows. You lose roughly 30% of your skin’s collagen in the first five years after menopause, leading to reduced firmness and deeper lines.
  • Cell turnover decreases. Dead skin cells linger longer on the surface, causing dullness, rough texture, and clogged pores.
  • The skin barrier weakens. Your skin becomes more reactive, more sensitive, and less able to retain moisture — even when it’s oily on the surface.
  • Hormonal acne appears. Adult breakouts, especially along the jawline and chin, are a classic sign of fluctuating hormones in your 40s.

None of this is your fault. It’s biology. But once you understand the biology, you can work with it instead of against it.

The Oily-and-Aging Skin Paradox (Yes, It’s Real)

One of the most confusing — and least talked about — aspects of mature skin care is the oily-and-aging combination. Most anti-aging products are formulated for dry skin. Most products for oily skin are drying, astringent, and stripping. Neither category really speaks to women who are dealing with both.

If you have oily mature skin, you’ve likely experienced the frustration of using a rich anti-aging moisturizer that breaks you out, or using a salicylic acid toner that leaves your skin raw and more inflamed than before. It’s not that you’re using the wrong products because you’re doing it wrong — it’s that most of those products simply weren’t designed for you.

Women with oily mature skin need a targeted approach that:

  • Controls excess sebum without stripping the skin barrier
  • Delivers hydration without heaviness or pore-clogging ingredients
  • Supports collagen and elasticity with lightweight, skin-compatible actives
  • Addresses hyperpigmentation and uneven texture that comes with age
  • Calms inflammation, which drives both breakouts and accelerated aging

This is exactly the gap that MaturedGlow was built to fill. And it’s why I wrote my eBook series — to give you a clear, nurse-backed, science-informed guide to navigating all of this without the overwhelm.

📗 The Complete Perimenopause Skin Fix —6 Steps to Glowing Skin, Balanced Hormones & Feeling Your Best After 35

If you’re in the thick of perimenopause — or if your skin has started behaving strangely and you suspect your hormones might be involved — The Complete Perimenopause Skin Fix is the guide you’ve been waiting for.

Perimenopause can begin as early as your mid-30s, and its effects on the skin are significant, often confusing, and almost never discussed in enough detail. This eBook dives deeper into:

  • The hormone-skin connection explained from a nurse’s clinical perspective
  • How fluctuating estrogen and progesterone trigger specific skin symptoms — and how to counter each one
  • A complete perimenopause skincare protocol, broken down by skin type and symptom
  • How to support your skin from the inside out through nutrition, stress management, and sleep
  • What to look for in a dermatologist or gynecologist if your symptoms need professional support

This is not a generic guide. It’s specific, clinical, and written for the real experience of women navigating midlife skin changes — by someone who has both the nursing background and the personal understanding to speak to it honestly.

5 Skincare Rules Every Woman Over 40 Should Know

Regardless of where you are in your skincare journey, these five principles apply to almost every woman navigating midlife skin changes. Think of these as your non-negotiables.

1. Gentle Cleansing Is Non-Negotiable

Foam cleansers with sulfates, harsh scrubs, and anything labeled “deep-pore cleansing” can be genuinely damaging to mature skin — even oily mature skin. When you strip the skin’s natural oils too aggressively, your sebaceous glands compensate by producing more oil. You end up oilier, not less.

Look for low-pH gel cleansers or micellar waters that remove impurities without disrupting your skin’s natural barrier. Cleanse twice daily — no more, no less.

2. Hydration Is Not the Same as Moisture

One of the most common misconceptions in skincare is that oily skin doesn’t need hydration. It absolutely does. Hydration (water content in the skin) and moisture (oil that seals that water in) are different things, and mature skin needs both in the right balance.

A lightweight, water-based hyaluronic acid serum used on damp skin is a game-changer for oily mature skin. It plumps, softens, and helps your other active ingredients penetrate better — without adding any heaviness or clogging your pores.

3. Retinol Is Your Best Anti-Aging Friend (When Used Correctly)

Retinol — a vitamin A derivative — is one of the most researched and proven ingredients in skincare. It accelerates cell turnover, stimulates collagen production, reduces the appearance of fine lines, and helps fade hyperpigmentation. For women over 40, it’s often the single most impactful ingredient you can add to your routine.

The key word is correctly. Retinol must be introduced gradually (starting at low concentrations, used just two to three nights per week), always followed by SPF during the day, and never used alongside certain other actives. Done right, it’s transformative. Done wrong, it’s irritating and counterproductive.

4. SPF Is Anti-Aging — Full Stop

If you use nothing else in your skincare routine, use sunscreen. Up to 80% of visible skin aging — wrinkles, dark spots, loss of firmness, rough texture — is caused by UV exposure. Daily SPF 30 or higher, rain or shine, is the single most powerful anti-aging tool available to you.

For oily skin, look for mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They tend to be less occlusive, more mattifying, and better tolerated than chemical filters, which can be pore-clogging and irritating for some mature skin types.

5. Your Skin Reflects Your Internal Health

No topical product can fully compensate for chronic stress, poor sleep, inflammatory diet, or significant hormonal imbalance. The skin is a mirror of what’s happening inside the body — and for women in their 40s and beyond, that connection becomes more visible than ever.

Prioritizing sleep quality, managing cortisol levels, eating an anti-inflammatory diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, and staying well-hydrated are all direct investments in your skin. These aren’t optional extras — they’re foundational to real, lasting results.

What Real Glow Looks Like After 40

“Glowing skin” after 40 doesn’t mean chasing the skin you had at 25. It means skin that is healthy, clear, well-hydrated, and genuinely radiant — at whatever age you are right now.

It means your skin tone is even, your texture is smooth, your pores look refined (not erased — refined), and you feel comfortable in your skin again. That kind of glow is 100% achievable after 40. I’ve seen it, I’ve helped women get there, and I’ve experienced it myself.

What it requires is the right information, the right products, and a routine that’s actually built for the skin you have now — not the skin you had a decade ago, and not the skin of a 25-year-old in a magazine ad.

That’s what the MaturedGlow community is built around. And it’s exactly what you’ll find inside the Glow After 40 eBook series.
